There is no getting around it, your mindset will make or break your goals in every part of your life and weight loss is no exception.
If you don’t come into the game ready to play and with the right mentallity, you will probably fail. So you need to come into the battle with the right thinking to guarantee weight loss success.
So, to help my readers along, I have come up with The Top Ten ways of Thinking For Weight Loss Success.
1. Don’t take vacations from exercise.
What is the point? If you do not enjoy your form of exercise, then why are you doing it? Find something you like. No matter who you are, or what your goals, THERE IS a form of activity and exercise you will enjoy, I PROMISE. Sometimes it is just a matter of changing your mindset. Instead of saying “I’m so tired I can’t workout”, say “I’m so tired I need to workout”. It has been proven scientifically that exercise increases your daily energy levels along with it’s weight loss benefits.
Some people believe that because athletes take a week or two off from working out every year that they should as well. But, bear in mind that these professional athletes workout 3-6 hours per day. Since I am sure that none of my readers do this, that taking a week or two off is not necessary. This does not mean you have to be tied to your workout routine 365 day s per year, it just means that a taking a vacation from activity should never be something you pursue. Are you going to the beach? Play some volley ball. Going camping? Go for a hike. There is never a shortage of activities you can do anywhere in the world. Never stop moving!!!
2. Have a short attention span.
Most successful people in life do. What does this mean for your workout? Keep them short and intense. There is no reason that to get to your goals you should be in the gym more than an hour per workout! NONE AT ALL. Get in, get it done, and get out. If you keep your workouts short and intense you will burn more calories, elevate your metabolism more throughout your day, and get faster longer lasting weight loss results. Its also easier to keep your workouts varied and fun when you shorten them.
3. Don’t sleep any more or less than you have to.
Sleep is an absolute necessity in life. Not getting enough sleep can lead to chronic illness, mood swings, depression, difficulty coping with stress, and all of these can affect your family and friends as well. Sleep is when your body recovers and repairs. On the flip side, you should not sleep more than you need. Excessive sleeping and sleeping in has been linked to diabetes, weight gain, and once again depression.one study showed that sleeping in excess of 8-9 hours per night increased a persons likelihood of developing type II diabetes by over 50%.
Not everyone is the same but is important to find out how much sleep you get and commit to yourself to get that amount. For some it is 5 hours a night. For most it is 8. it can be confusing but listen to your body, and get what you need.
4. Don’t depend on technology.
I don’t know about your but I remember when technology was going to change the world and increase how much time you had because you could get things done faster. Maybe its just me but I feel like life before cell phones, laptops, and fancy vacuums was much easier.
Now with technology, things seem to take longer. Even workouts. Don’t depend on fancy machines to achieve your weight loss goals. Stick to the basics with your workout and you will have more fun and see better results. There is no reason you cant get amazing weight loss results without ever stepping onto a treadmill or sitting on a weight machine. I often train clients for an entire session using just one dumbbell or kettle bell and they are spent ofter just 20 minutes. In fact, many of my clients know that when they walk into the room, the less equipment they see in the middle of the room where we are going to workout, the harder they are going to work that day. They will walk into a room and see one bar on the floor and say “oh noooo”, then during the workout, I’ll tell them they are going to get on an exercise bike for a few minutes to recover and they will then say “thank god!!!”.
5. Think of yourself or, if you workout with a trainer or partner, as a small army.
Every workout, you should be going to battle to completely decimate your enemy (fat) as fast as humanly possible. No one ever won a battle by pacing themselves and taking it easy. Wars are won by those who charge in and just blow things up. No matter how cheesy it sounds, go into your workout like Rambo ran into the camp to rescue those POWs. Fast and efficient. Torch your belly fat and get out of their.
6. Never underestimate yourself.
If you think you are going to have a bad workout, you will. If you walk into your workout with a grin or your face because your know you are about to have the best workout ever, you will. Know you are going to succeed and you will. the mid does not know the difference between reality and what you think. So, think how great things are and your mind will manifest those great things in reality. Try it and you will be amazed!!!
7. Know that success breeds success
Ever notice that when you are having a great workout that you don’t want to quit? Remember that. Every time you workout you should try to set a new personal record for something. # of pushups, how long you can hold a plank, how many minutes you can continually do kettlebell swings. If you do this every workout, then you will improve with every workout. The more progress you see the more momentum you will have and the higher your chances of weight loss success.
8. Goals are good but friends and family are better.
When you have a goal for yourself, go as many family and friends as possible and say “I am going to _________”. Notice I did not say “I am going to try to ____________”. Telling these people you are going to achieve them is very motivating. It will also make sure you are accountable because I promise that these people will ask you “how is your ____________ going?”. You dont want to let them down even more than yourself. Accountability is everything with goals. You will be the first person to give yourself an excuse to skip a workout or have a reason why you ate like crap today, so don’t make yourself the only person that will be holding you accountable.
When trying to give up an addiction, one of the most important things a person is told to do is find a “sponsor”. This is not someone to give them money, it is someone that holds them accountable and they can talk to when they start feeling like giving up. I don’t know the exact stats but having both family and friends in the past who had addictions and were trying to kick the habit, I never saw one succeed without a sponsor and losing weight is no different. I am not in anyway comparing the difficultly of fighting addiction, I am just showing how much having another person to hold yourself accountable will improve your chances of weight loss.
9. Treat each decision as if you’re making it for a loved one.
If your best friend was trying to lose weight and you had to order their meal while they went to the bathroom, would you order them something healthy or something full of fat and refined carbs? If you were thinking about skipping your workout because you were tired ask yourself “if my wife called and wanted to skip it so she could watch TV and rest would I try to motivate her to get her workout in or just tell her that I DVR’d Law & Order last night?” Your weight loss goals should be held as dearly as a loved ones.
10. Be curious
A successful person is ALWAYS curious. I don’t know why it is that way but it is. One of the reasons my clients are so successful is because I never stop researching the best, safest, and most efficient ways to lose weight. You should always be open to new ways of exercising. Dont get stagnant. Make sure your workouts are fun. Curiosity pays!!!
