Before I got started helping others lose weight, I was no different than the average person out there. I went to bed one night and, when I woke up the next morning, BOOM I was fat, out of shape, and the only thing that made me feel worse than I did all day long was when I would take off my shirt and look in the mirror. I would look at my reflection in the mirror and say “You were a college scholarship athlete recruited by some of the biggest schools in the country, you were a state champion powerlifter, you have always been healthy and fit, what the hell happened to you?”
You see, before my college football career ended, I had plenty of time to workout. In fact, most days, I spent no less than 4 hours a day in training. I was running, doing agility work, and lifting. I thought I knew everything there was to know about fitness. But, there were three cold hard facts I knew nothing about yet.
When my football “haydays” ended, my thought process shifted. I just assumed I had always been fit, athletic, and muscular so that must be how things will always be. That’s when the bomb went off. I continued to eat all the time. I was depressed because of the life changes that were happening (football was over, I was growing up…) and never gave a second thought to the way I was eating. Anytime I ate more than normal, I just passed it off as being emotional.
The funny thing is, I was half right. When I was sad, I ate… When I was happy, I ate… When I was excited, I ate… When I was tired, I ate… When I was mad, I ate… When I was, bored, I ate… When I was busy, I ate….. and it wasn’t long before my lean and mean 215lbs former self was a soft and flabby mess 270lbs. I wish I could show you a picture but I was so ashamed of what I had turned into, I ran at the mere mention of a camera. I started avoiding seeing old friends from high school because I didn’t want them to see what the captain of the football team and one of our high school’s all star athletes had let himself become. I even remember being in the local Wal-Mart one night and spotted my old high school football coach. I was so ashamed, I ducked into the “Lawn and Garden” section until I was sure he was gone. I didn’t want him to see what I had become….
Fast forward a year and I got a job as a membership representative in the only environment that brought me happiness anymore, a gym. I began exercising again and saw some results but quickly became frustrated at my ability to keep losing weight. I mean, I was working my but off! I was “doing my cardio” and I was “eating right” and I lost a little weight but in reality, I wasn’t really seeing much in the way of results. I started to realize that I all I really knew was what I learned in the weight room in football. But…I didn’t have the first clue how to take an average overweight person (which was now me) and get them lean and fit without spending hours on end working out.
